Spider veins are damaged, small veins that appear like purple, blue, or red “webs” near the surface of the skin.
Like varicose veins, they are not aesthetically appealing. As a result, spider veins are more often a cosmetic concern instead of pain or health concern.
Damaged valves in blood vessels cause spider veins to appear. When the valves stop working, the blood becomes stagnated and builds up in the artery. Following the buildup, small veins form, thus creating spider veins. While they are commonly found in the legs, spider veins may form on the face.
The Metropolitan Cardiovascular Institute can treat spider veins in the following ways:
· Compression Stockings – to help improve blood flow, to provide pressure to the legs, and to reduce any discomfort or swelling.
· Sclerotherapy – to inject a sclerosant into the problem veins, which seals them.
