If you find yourself suffering from twisted, enlarged veins, the Metropolitan Cardiovascular Institute is here for you.
Varicose veins may simply be a cosmetic concern; however, for some, varicose veins cause pain and discomfort. Our practice can provide effective treatments to remove varicose veins, thus improving your overall vascular health.
Most often found in the legs, varicose veins result from weak or damaged valves. While arteries are responsible for moving our blood through the body, the veins return the blood to the heart. In order to do this, the veins must allow an unobstructed flow. When obstructed, the blood may flow backwards and then pool in the vein. As a result, the veins become twisted and enlarged.
What increases the risk of developing varicose veins? The most common factor is age. As we age, there is more wear and tear on the valves, which results in the backwards flow.
Another factor is sex. Females tend to develop the condition due to hormonal changes. Pregnancy is a common reason, also. There is an increase in the amount of blood needed to support the fetus.
In addition, there are hormonal changes. Obesity increases the risk, given that having excess weight adds pressure on the veins.
As with many health-related illnesses, family history can play a role. A final factor is being sedentary. Lack of movement for long periods of time decreases blood flow.
How can the Metropolitan Cardiovascular Institute treat your varicose veins? Treatment is determined by the severity of the problem.
Following an extensive examination to assess the problem, a plan will be provided.
Treatment may be one of the following:
· Compression Stockings – to help improve blood flow, to provide pressure to the legs, and to reduce any discomfort or swelling.
· Ablation Therapy – to use a heat therapy to close and seal the vein.
· Sclerotherapy - to inject a sclerosant into the problem veins, which seals them.
